Coach Spotlight – Coach Hoey

Drum roll please. This week’s winner is…Coach Hoey! Hoey is not only a G02-04 Coach, he is also one of our Directors of Coaching!

• Soccer Playing Experience (High School, College, Other): I grew up playing high level soccer in Washington State on an National elite club team. I had the opportunity to play in college, but suffered a severe head injury that made it unwise to continue to play.

• Position Played: I spent my time in the Mid Field and on the wings. I loved scoring and assisting.

• Playing Highlights: Winning the Washington State Championship (equivalent of winning National Cup in Washington) and going further in the Far West Regional Tournament than any Washington team ever had. Being one of the leading scorers of my varsity high school team all four years.

• Coaching Experience: I started coaching when I was 16 as a way of earning community service hours. I loved it immediately. I continued coaching in college. After college, I started coaching club. It has been a blast. I love helping kids grow through the game and achieve whatever goals they may have.

• Most Memorable Moment on a Soccer Field: Being a part of a State Championship Team is pretty cool.

• Most Embarrassing Soccer Moment: There was a perfect action shot of me in the local newspaper. I’m flying through the air, volleying the ball over the goal keeper who is sliding underneath me. It’s a great picture. However, it wasn’t a volley, it was a sitter, and I missed.

• Game Day Superstition or Ritual: 2 hours before the game…left Sock, right sock. Left shoe, right shoe. Tie left shoe, tie right shoe. Crossbar challenge with my buddy, first to three. Chewing on chili peppers the entire time. An action movie score playing in my head phones.

• Favorite Soccer Team: The Italian National Team. Otherwise, I am a fan of players and coaches. I don’t have a consistent favorite team.

• Favorite Soccer Player: I am a Pirlo fan. I am a Bastian Schweinsteiger fan. I am a Messi fan.

• Favorite Non-Soccer Team: The Detroit Red Wings (Hockey)

• Favorite Athlete: Tobin Heath

• Favorite Movie: Dead Poets Society

• Favorite Actor or Actress: Tom Hanks and Charlize Theron

• Favorite Musical Group or Singer: Linkin Park and Mumford and Sons

• Favorite TV Show: Game of Thrones

• Favorite Meal: Anything my mom makes!

• Favorite Ice Cream Flavor: Disneyland Main Street Ice Cream Parlor

• Hobbies: Anything in the outdoors

• Dream Vacation Destination: Somewhere with access to the beautiful outdoors as well as a city

• Four Famous People You Would Invite to Dinner: Nelson Mandela, Tupac, Desmond Tutu, and Mother Teresa

• How Many Friends Do You Have on Facebook?: No clue. Maybe 500 or something like that.

• Where Was Your Last Selfie Taken? In Israel

• Best Advice for Players: Don’t be afraid of hard work. Hard work, with the right perspective is a lot of fun. Hard work pays off. Not everyone is a D1 top 50 player, that is ok. There is room for you to play in college if that is really what you want. You will have to work for that too. Think outside the box. Be creative. Don’t be afraid to express yourself as a player. You are the player, no one else, play for you and be you. Be a good teammate and a coach-able player. Prioritize these things.
